SUMMARY:Oxford Philharmonic and Yefim Bronfman
DESCRIPTION:SCHUMANN\nSymphony No. 2 in C major\, Op. 61 \nBRAHMS\nPiano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major\, Op. 83 \nYefim Bronfman piano \nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nYefim Bronfman is championed by critics as a superlative exponent of Brahms. His sensational 2012 Proms performance of Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 captivated London audiences and his debut at the 2017 Oxford Piano Festival performing the same work promises to be a stirring occasion for all lovers of the Romantic piano genre. Schumann’s Symphony No. 2\, written during the onset of the illnesses that would eventually kill him\, bears witness to an astonishing artistic fervour\, recollecting the worlds of Bach and Beethoven while provoking a new dynasty of symphonic imagination.

SUMMARY:Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony & Concerto Cycle V
DESCRIPTION:BEETHOVEN\nSymphony No. 8 in F major\, Op. 93\nPiano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major\, Op. 19\nSymphony No. 6 in F major\, Op. 68\, ‘Pastoral’ \nMarios Papadopoulos piano/conductor \nBeethoven beyond the stereotypes. The composer loved to perform the second of his piano concertos\, not to position himself as the conquering hero but to revel in the colour\, imagination and reactivity of pure music and all its possibilities. Here\, with Marios Papadopoulos directing from the piano\, that work forms the centerpiece in a concert whose two symphonies see Beethoven in a similarly amiable mood. The composer’s sixth is a premonition of the worlds of Mahler and Sibelius in its view of nature as man’s salvation. His eighth is simply a joy from start to end. \nPre-concert Recital 18:30 \nYoung Artists’ Platform\nA chance to hear talented young musicians\nFree admission \nThe concert is scheduled to end at approximately 22.00 \nTickets: £45.00 £35.00 £25.00 £15.00

SUMMARY:Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony & Concerto Cycle VI
DESCRIPTION:BEETHOVEN\nSymphony No. 4 in B flat major\, Op. 60\nPiano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major\, Op. 73\, ‘Emperor’ \nMarios Papadopoulos piano/conductor \nFew works communicate just how significant and pivotal a cultural figure Beethoven was like the ‘Emperor’ piano concerto\, every bit deserving of its title. This unprecedented ‘grand concerto’ would explode the scale of the genre and prove a model for composers from Brahms to Liszt and beyond. Inspired by new\, louder and more sensitive pianos and alarmed by Napoleon’s bombardment of Vienna\, Beethoven created a monumental musical testament to the freedom of man. Marios Papadopoulos plays and directs the concerto after Beethoven’s charming Symphony No. 4. \nPre-concert Recital 18:30 \nYoung Artists’ Platform\nA chance to hear talented young musicians\nFree admission \nThe concert is scheduled to end at approximately 21.05 \nSupported by Geoffrey & Caroline de Jager \n\nTickets: £35 £2 £15

SUMMARY:Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony & Concerto Cycle VII
DESCRIPTION:BEETHOVEN\nChristus am Ölberge\, Op. 85\nViolin Concerto in D major\, Op. 61 \nEleanor Dennis soprano\nIan Bostridge tenor\nDavid Soar bass\nThe Choir of Keble College\nAnne-Sophie Mutter violin \nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nAnne-Sophie Mutter returns to the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and brings to our Beethoven celebrations one of the composer’s most joyous\, lyrical works – his Violin Concerto. If the composer appears trouble-free in that score\, his oratorio Christus am Ölberge was a cry of anguish\, a reflection of the composer’s inner turmoil through that of Christ’s. It is a powerful\, dramatic and intense work in which Beethoven is unflinching in the face of emotional and physical distress\, but is filled with music of strange beauty\, clear humanity and compelling drama nonetheless. \nThe concert is scheduled to end at approximately 21.50 \nSupported by Michael Thomas & Serena Simmons \n\nTickets: £40 £30 £20

SUMMARY:Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony & Concerto Cycle VIII
DESCRIPTION:BEETHOVEN\nFantasia in C minor\, Op. 80\, ‘Choral Fantasy’\nSymphony No. 9 in D minor\, Op. 125\, ‘Choral’ \nClaire Rutter soprano\nAngela Simkin mezzo-soprano\nToby Spence tenor\nDavid Shipley bass\nPhilharmonischer Chor der Stadt Bonn\nPaul Krämer chorus master \nMarios Papadopoulos piano/conductor \nConcert introduced by John Suchet \nBeethoven’s ninth still sounds palpably off-the-leash despite the two centuries of musical evolution that have passed since its first performance in 1824. This most iconic of symphonies is still riddled with contradictions – part model of classical form\, part complete rule-breaker; a dark\, deranged romp and an inspiring journey to triumph. Marios Papadopoulos conducts it here\, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra joined by singers from Beethoven’s home town of Bonn\, after the very work that smoothened its way: the unique hybrid of symphony\, concerto and choral work that is the ‘Choral Fantasy’. \nThe concert is scheduled to end at approximately 21.50 \n\nTickets: £40 £30 £20

SUMMARY:Oxford Philharmonic at the Cadogan
DESCRIPTION:Mozart Ch’io mi scordi di te?\, K. 505\nMozart Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor\, K. 466\nJohn Rutter Anniversary Greeting for the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra (world premiere)*\nBeethoven Symphony No. 7 in A major\, Op. 92 \nSophie Bevan Soprano\nJohn Rutter conductor*\nMarios Papadopoulos piano/conductor \nThe seventh is Beethoven’s most fascinating symphony – a work whose new vision of rhythm’s relationship with harmony produced the most physical\, compelling music that had ever been created. Beethoven wasn’t just exploring new techniques\, he was giving voice to a wave of joy that had swept into his life and filled him with determination and optimism. Before it\, we hear Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20\, which sees the composer begin his transformation of the piano concerto from entertaining diversion to engrossing narrative experience. Marios Papadopoulos is conductor and soloist for this visit to London’s Cadogan Hall.

DESCRIPTION:Morfydd Llwyn Owen Nocturne*  Side-by-Side\nElgar Cello Concerto in E minor\, Op. 85\nElgar Variations on an Original Theme\, Op. 36\, ‘Enigma’ \nAlban Gerhardt cello\nCayenna Ponchione-Bailey conductor*\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nWhen Edward Elgar started to improvise a little tune at his piano one day\, considering how a group of his closest friends might play that tune\, he gave birth to one of the greatest masterpieces of English music. The ‘Enigma’ variations are uplifting and resigned\, humorous and profound. Elgar’s dazzling\, virtuosic orchestral showpiece comes after his acerbic\, embittered and sorrowful Cello Concerto written in less happy times\, and the rediscovered gem that is Morfydd Llwyn Owen’s sumptuous Nocturne.

DESCRIPTION:Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major\, Op. 19\nBruckner Symphony No. 7 in E major\, WAB 107 \nPaul Lewis piano\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nNone of his works brought Anton Bruckner the joy and pride of his seventh symphony. This is the composer’s most delicately etched orchestral creation and his most instantly beautiful – a symphony that enshrines a heartfelt eulogy for Richard Wagner but thrusts with excitement and changeability too. For this culmination of our season at the Sheldonian Theatre\, Marios Papadopoulos conducts Bruckner’s symphony here after Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 – actually the composer’s first full-length orchestral work\, and an imposingly assertive one at that.

SUMMARY:Anna Fedorova and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor\, Op. 16\nSibelius Symphony No. 5 in E flat major\, Op. 82 \nAnna Fedorova piano\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nFor Sibelius\, only nature could transcend the agony of life. The composer’s Symphony No. 5 is perhaps the supreme musical example of that concept – a work in which the composer imagines himself soaring above earthly concerns like the flock of swans he describes using the orchestra’s inspiring\, ascendanttrumpets. The Nordic region’s most stirring symphony is heard here at the Sheldonian Theatre alongside its most famous Piano Concerto – Edvard Grieg’s Concerto in A minor. The composition is a reconciling of romantic sweep and passion with the clarity and fresh air of his Norwegian mountain aesthetic. Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova joins Marios Papadopoulos and the Orchestra for this concert of bold statements from the north.

SUMMARY:Evengy Kissin
DESCRIPTION:John Rutter Anniversary Greeting for the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra\nRachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor\, Op. 30\nShostakovich Symphony No. 5 in D minor\, Op. 47 \nEvgeny Kissin piano\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nUnder the greatest pressure\, Shostakovich delivered his most supreme masterpiece. Condemned by the Soviet powers after his satirical opera Lady Macbeth\, Shostakovich was ordered to write a symphony rejoicing in Stalin’s reign of terror. The result was a score poetic\, sardonic and climactic that ends with a forced smile that proves the most shattering of climaxes. Before it\, giant of the Russian piano school Evgeny Kissin joins Marios Papadopoulos for Rachmaninov’s dignified Piano Concerto No. 3\, in which a lone virtuoso thunders against a surging orchestra in a heart-stopping narrative. John Rutter’s new work written for the Orchestra’s 25th birthday kicks off this titanic season opening at Oxford Town Hall.

SUMMARY:Mozart Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:Mozart Overture to Die Entführung aus dem Serail\, K. 384\nMozart Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major\, K. 216\nMozart Symphony No. 39 in E flat major\, K. 543 \nCharlotte Scott violin\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nAssociate Concertmaster Charlotte Scott joins us for an evening of Mozart\, this time the composer’s Violin Concerto No. 3 – a score characterised by grace and charm\, until it tears into an Alsatian dance at the end. Before it we hear Mozart channelling the spirit of Turkey in one of his most characterful opera overtures\, while afterward comes the Mozart symphony in which everything changed. The first of his final symphonic trilogy is a work from which the brooding opening spills music of the most infectious joy. Marios Papadopoulos and the Orchestra return to the Sheldonian Theatre for this celebration of the genius and joy of Mozart.

SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky Piano Trio
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven Piano Trio in G major\, Op. 1 No. 2\nTchaikovsky Piano Trio in A minor\, Op. 50 \nMembers of the Oxford Philharmonic\nMarios Papadopoulos piano \nTchaikovsky once dismissed the combination of piano\, violin and cello as unworkable. But when his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein died\, Tchaikovsky changed tack dramatically. In Rubinstein’s memory\, a piano trio of extraordinary potency and profundity emerged deep from within Tchaikovsky’s soul. The resulting work is symphonic in scale and theatrical in drama\, combining heroism and euphoria with the deepest human pain and pathos. Marios Papadopoulos joins members of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra to traverse the two colossal movements of Tchaikovsky’s chamber music masterpiece\, after opening with the elegant piano trio from Beethoven’s very first opus.

DESCRIPTION:Tchaikovsky Polonaise and Waltz from Eugene Onegin\, Op. 24* Side-by-Side\nRachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor\, Op. 18\nRachmaninov Symphony No. 2 in E minor\, Op. 27 \nLise de la Salle piano\nCayenna Ponchione-Bailey conductor*\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nThere’s a reason Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is the most popular work of its kind ever written. From lonely chords\, this iconic score hurtles towards a thundering climax via a succession of irresistible melodies – athletic one moment and heart-rending the next. Six years later\, the composer freed himself from political turmoil with a stretch in Dresden that would become one of the most productive of his career. The standout result was a symphony powered by melody that encompasses infernal whirlwinds\, passionate declarations of love and heartfelt reflections of peace. French pianist Lise de la Salle joins us for this feast of peak Rachmaninov\, opening with livewire dances from his great forbear Tchaikovsky. \nYoung Artists’ Platform\nPre-concert recital 18:30\nSupported by The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust
