SUMMARY:Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony & Concerto Cycle VII
DESCRIPTION:BEETHOVEN\nChristus am Ölberge\, Op. 85\nViolin Concerto in D major\, Op. 61 \nEleanor Dennis soprano\nIan Bostridge tenor\nDavid Soar bass\nThe Choir of Keble College\nAnne-Sophie Mutter violin \nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nAnne-Sophie Mutter returns to the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and brings to our Beethoven celebrations one of the composer’s most joyous\, lyrical works – his Violin Concerto. If the composer appears trouble-free in that score\, his oratorio Christus am Ölberge was a cry of anguish\, a reflection of the composer’s inner turmoil through that of Christ’s. It is a powerful\, dramatic and intense work in which Beethoven is unflinching in the face of emotional and physical distress\, but is filled with music of strange beauty\, clear humanity and compelling drama nonetheless. \nThe concert is scheduled to end at approximately 21.50 \nSupported by Michael Thomas & Serena Simmons \n\nTickets: £40 £30 £20

SUMMARY:Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony & Concerto Cycle VIII
DESCRIPTION:BEETHOVEN\nFantasia in C minor\, Op. 80\, ‘Choral Fantasy’\nSymphony No. 9 in D minor\, Op. 125\, ‘Choral’ \nClaire Rutter soprano\nAngela Simkin mezzo-soprano\nToby Spence tenor\nDavid Shipley bass\nPhilharmonischer Chor der Stadt Bonn\nPaul Krämer chorus master \nMarios Papadopoulos piano/conductor \nConcert introduced by John Suchet \nBeethoven’s ninth still sounds palpably off-the-leash despite the two centuries of musical evolution that have passed since its first performance in 1824. This most iconic of symphonies is still riddled with contradictions – part model of classical form\, part complete rule-breaker; a dark\, deranged romp and an inspiring journey to triumph. Marios Papadopoulos conducts it here\, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra joined by singers from Beethoven’s home town of Bonn\, after the very work that smoothened its way: the unique hybrid of symphony\, concerto and choral work that is the ‘Choral Fantasy’. \nThe concert is scheduled to end at approximately 21.50 \n\nTickets: £40 £30 £20
