Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony & Concerto Cycle V

19th November 2020 @ 19:30 - 22:00

BEETHOVEN
Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93
Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 19
Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, ‘Pastoral’

Marios Papadopoulos piano/conductor

Beethoven beyond the stereotypes. The composer loved to perform the second of his piano concertos, not to position himself as the conquering hero but to revel in the colour, imagination and reactivity of pure music and all its possibilities. Here, with Marios Papadopoulos directing from the piano, that work forms the centerpiece in a concert whose two symphonies see Beethoven in a similarly amiable mood. The composer’s sixth is a premonition of the worlds of Mahler and Sibelius in its view of nature as man’s salvation. His eighth is simply a joy from start to end.
