Anne-Sophie Mutter returns to the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and brings to our Beethoven celebrations one of the composer’s most joyous, lyrical works – his Violin Concerto. If the composer appears trouble-free in that score, his oratorio Christus am Ölberge was a cry of anguish, a reflection of the composer’s inner turmoil through that of Christ’s. It is a powerful, dramatic and intense work in which Beethoven is unflinching in the face of emotional and physical distress, but is filled with music of strange beauty, clear humanity and compelling drama nonetheless.
The concert is scheduled to end at approximately 21.50
